1.   Break the following code by substituting a different letter  for each of the letters given.  (Hints:  This is just one code.  Try to guess the small words and common letters first.  If you use a word processor, make 2 copies. Do not mess up  the first copy.  On the second copy, change each capital letter for the lower case letter you think it should be under Edit, Replace, More, Match Case, Replace All.

2.  Locusts are insects similar to grasshoppers.  If they hatch   continuously, birds would eat them and the population would never be great. They developed a strategy where the eggs lie dormant for many years and then all hatch at once.  Then there are too many locusts for any predator to eat.

Some locusts hatch every 13 years.  Some locusts hatch every 17   years. How often will both types hatch in the same year?

    3.   Abe, Bruce, and Carl are comparing their money.  Carl thinks they should all have the same amount and suggests that Abe should give Bruce $1 and Abe should give Carl $3.  Then they will all have the same amount of money. Instead, Abe earns $10.  None of the boys spent any money.  Now Abe has twice as much as car.  How much money did the three boys have before Abe earned more?

1. Solution to the code

“I consider my ability to arouse enthusiasm among the men,” said Charles Schwab, Andrew Carnegie’s assistant, not the stock broker, “
the greatest asset I possess, and the way to develop the best that
is in a man is by appreciation and encouragement.”

“There is nothing else that so kills the ambitions of a man as criticisms from his superiors.  I never criticize anyone.  I
believe in giving a man incentive to work.  So I am anxious to
praise and loathe to find fault.  If I like anything, I am hearty
in my approbation and lavish in my praise.”

Taken from “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie

2. Solution:

13 x 17 = 221 years.

Every 221 years, both types of locusts will hatch in the same year.

3.  Solution:

Method 1:

Let x = the average amount

A=Abe=x+4

B=Bruce=x-1

C=Carl=x-3

A+10=(x+4)+10=2C=2(x-3)
      x+14      =2x-6

20      = x

Abe    had $24

Bruce had $19

Carl   had $17

Method 2:

A=Abe

B=Bruce

C=Carl

 A-4     =B+1 =C+3

A+10          =2C

  A -7  =B-2  = C

2A-14=2B-4=2C

A+10=2C=2A-14

24            =  A

Abe  =$24

Bruce=$19

Carl  = $17
