"Reality is one infinite life. It is self directing, self-conscious, energy, continuously active. Every act of it is itself life which in turn is a self-direcitng energy. Looked at from outside these acts are spatial things and events. Some of the acts in the course of development have become self-conscious. These are 'I' and 'you'."
A quote from Iqbal, an early 20th century Pakistani sufi poet
Dr, Muhammad Iqbal (1873-1938),
Pakistani philosopher, poet, and political leader, born in Sialkot, India (now Pakistan). He was a prominent leader of All India Muslim League and is credited with the conception of Pakistan as an Islamic Republic. Earlier he was awarded the title of Sir by the British rulers. Iqbal was considered the foremost Muslim thinker of his day and he blended mysticism and modernism and quest of knowledge in his poetry in Urdu and Persian languages. His work has been translated in English, German and many other languages.

Among his many works of poetry and philosophy are The Secrets of the Self (1915) and A Message from the East (1923). He is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Pakistan.

Tauheed - Unity of God

With the faith in unity there was alive a powerful vision
What it is today? Merely a point for discussion,

Unless the spirit glows with that light of faith,
Hidden from Muslims would remain a Muslim's station

Oh you commander I have seen your arms
Sword of unity is missing from your munition.

(Translated by Shah N. Khan)

The Creation

Thou didst create the night, but I made the lamp.
Thou didst create clay, but I made the cup.
Thou didst create the deserts, mountains and forests,
I produced the orchards, gardens and groves.
It is I who made the glass out of stone,
And it is I who turn a poison into an antidote.

Quoted in: Anita Desai, The Clear Light of Day,

Nationalism

Of these new Gods, the biggest is nationalism
That garb that it wears is the coffin  of religion

It is the idol hewn and sculpted by the modern civilization
That desecrates and destroys the abode of the Prophet.
O Muslim. in the power of Unity lies your strength and destiny
Your country is ISLAM.and Mohammedan.is your nationality.

Show to the world the glory of that divine  vision
O Mohammedans destroy it and reduce it to dust.
