The Unbelievers are protectors, one of another: Unless ye do this, (protect each other), there would be tumult and oppression on earth, and great mischief. _008.073, AlQuran
Hadith Narrated by Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term "Haya" covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith." From Bukhari Sharif, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 8:

Beauty
Beauty depends on size as well as symmetry. No very small animal can be beautiful, for looking at it takes so small a portion of time that the impression of it will be confused. Nor can any very large one, for a whole view of it cannot be had at once, and so there will be no unity and completeness.__ Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC), Greek philosopher

The ideal has many names, and beauty is but one of them.
_W. Somerset Maugham (1874–1965),

Beauty. The power by which a woman charms a lover and terrifies a husband.
_Ambrose Bierce (1842–1914), U.S. author.

Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.
_ Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931), Lebanese poet

The Emergence of Pakistan

Richard Hakluyt  said  geography and chronology are the Sun and the Moon, the right eye  and the left eye of history. The emergence of Pakistan on 14th August, 1947 as the first Muslim Nation state on the map of our contemporary world, unfurling the green flag of crescent and star and symbolically named Pakistan, is the most significant event in the political history of Islam since the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali – the subversion and the down fall of the rule of the  “ rightly guided caliphs” in 641 A.D.

The emergence of Pakistan is an event of great significance, because of the fact that the entire body of the multi-ethnic motley crowd of Muslims drawn from different racial stocks, tribes and clans – Arabs, Turks, Afghans, Central Asians, Mongols, Persians and Indians – all professing Islam as their religion and speaking different languages inhabiting the sub continent of India in the first half of the eighteenth century, once considered a ruling race by virtue of the common denominator of their religion, found themselves a hapless community enslaved and hunted by the British and dominated by the overwhelming majority of  Hindus dominating and detesting them as  mlechas (impure aliens) and who were now coming up with a vengeance pushing them out of all positions of power and pelf.

The partition plan taken by Lord Mountbatten to London and discussed with the Prime Minister C.R. Attlee was typically code-named and the two dominions came into being much earlier than the stipulated date of June 1948 in unholy haste and hurry. Even conceivable trick was played on Muhammad Ali Jinnah to cajole and coerce and frighten him out of his demand for Pakistan. Undaunted by the unholy combination of the Congress and the Labour Government of C.R. Attlee spearheaded by the Viceroy Lord Mountbatten himself, Jinnah stood firm like a mountain against all their tactics and succeeded in changing the idea of the Viceroy to transfer power to the interim Government as soon as the principle of partition was accepted by His Majesty Government.  Although Mountbatten considered Jinnah s rejection of the partition of Punjab and Bengal as blackmail, he has also come around to the view that since Congress had not genuinely accepted the missions plan a transfer of power to the Interim Government would be neither advisable nor practicable.

The making of a Pakistan was impossibility, the story, and the sacrifices, the constitutional battle fought for 35 years and won at last from 1913 up to 1947 requires the history to be written in blood of those unknown who sacrificed their lives, honor and property for the creation of Pakistan. Pakistan was not emerged as an accident to divide India, but Pakistan was the actual homeland of the second largest community to live according to their rites, custom and as peaceful nation. To understand the partition, we have to read history- long history stretching over a period of over twelve hundred years. From the year 712 A.D when Muhammad Bin Qasim, the Arab General entered Sindh as a conqueror up to the decline and fall of the Mughal Empire in 1857. History of India itself indicates that that India is not one Nation.

The book The Emergence of Pakistan published by the National Book Foundation, Islamabad, Pakistan pages 444 and written by Fazale Kareem is worth reading.

Beauty Pageants in Islamic Communities
by Arif  Nawaz Khan and Shahzabe

Recently on a television show in Pakistan beautiful girl was selected as a 20th Century Woman and awarded an expensive car. The show was organized by a cosmetic firm as part of their publicity campaign and the organizers took care that the participants maintain feminine grace and poise without exposing or revealing too much!  The show had continued for several weeks without attracting too much public attention and none of the extremists took notice.

Beauty pageants in the style of Western World are becoming popular in China, Japan, Korea and developing countries like India, Thailand etc. These beauty contests can be regarded as the most perfectly rendered theater in the emerging culture which perfectly captures what people yearn for: a low-class ritual, a polished restatement of vulgarity, that wants to open the door to high-class respectability by way of plain middle-class anxiety and ambition. Such contests are unthinkable in Islamic countries where still
Millions of women observe Purdah and use Burqas and veils.

Couple of years ago  many people were shocked to learn that a Pakistani woman was participating in the Miss International Beauty contest to be held in Tokyo. Pakistan government ordered its diplomats in Japan to contact the organisers and try to bar her from using the country's name. The orgnizers ignore that!

Soon after photographs of 21-year old Neelam Noorani appeared in newspapers on Friday, appearing in the preview of the Tokyo beauty pageant as "Miss Pakistan".

The News daily reported a front page story titled, 'Beauty queen or an ultimate disgrace', and also carried the picture of Noorani taking part in the pageant.

"Miss Noorani, seen as a disgrace by many Pakistanis, was wearing ceremonial strap prominently inscribing "PAKISTAN", the daily said.

According to the organisers 51 girls would compete for the Miss International crown on September 30 in Tokyo. Expressing shock over Noorani taking part in the contest, Tariq Janjua, the Secretary Culture, Sports and Tourism was quoted by the newspaper as saying that the government had nothing to do with "this shameful development." "We cannot allow this," Janjua said adding that such contests were in total "contrast" to the social and cultural values of Pakistan.

Malaysia, Turkey and Indonesia seems to be three Muslim countries where beauty pagents are organized though protests are held in Indonesia about such events. The Governments of Islamic countries generally do not approve such events though in Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia they do not interfere because of their policies
towards human rights and freedom of expression.

Witness
A witness to an automobile accident was testifying. The following exchange took place between the lawyer and the witness:
The lawyer:      "Did you actually see the accident?"
The witness:     "Yes, sir."
The lawyer:     "How far away were you when the accident happened?"
The witness:    "Thirty-one feet, six and one quarter inches."
The lawyer       (thinking he'd trap the witness): "Well, sir, will you tell the jury how you knew it was exactly that distance?"
The witness:    "Because when the accident happened I took out a tape and measured it. I knew some stupid lawyer would ask me that question."
