Notable Quotes
. Sayings of Holy Prophet about Acquisition of Knowledge

"Acquire  knowledge. It  enableth  its  possesor  to distinguish right from wrong; it lighteth the way to Heaven; it is our friend in  the desert, our society in  solitude,  our  companion  when  friendless,  it
guideth us to happiness; it sustaineth us in misery; it is  an  ornament  amongst  friends; and an armour against enemies."

To seek knowledge is the duty of every Muslim, male or female.

Ink of scholar is more sacred than the blood of a martyr.

One hour of contemplation and study of God's creation is better than a year of adoration.

To listen to the words of the learned and to instil into other the lesson of science is better than mere religious exercise.

He who leaves home in search of knowledge walks in the path of God.

Illegal Invasion of Iraq
That brings us to our illegal invasion of Iraq, an invasion we now know was engineered years in advance of 9/11 and for reasons that had nothing to do with the purported "war on terror." We also know that we did it to aid Israel in its
desire to destroy one of their enemies, a nemesis that supported "freedom fighters" against Israeli occupation of the land of Palestine. And today we have a second letter from Osama bin Laden, delivered via video, that proclaimed
for a second time that Israel's subjugation of the indigenous population in Palestine and its continued "cleansing" to rid the land of them, is a reason for the destruction caused by 9/11. Now, 100,000 civilian deaths later, more than 1300
American soldiers dead, cities in ruins, and the people in revolution against the American oppressor, we, as a nation, have chosen to continue our unilateral aggression making America more of a pariah nation and even less likely to
share the grief of millions who have suffered at our hands.

British Muslims Welcome Return of Last British Detainees
from Guantanamo

The Muslim Council of Britain welcomes today's return of the final four British detainees from Guantanamo Bay.

These returnees have been through an appallingly lengthy and unjust ordeal in which they were deliberately held in a legal black hole by the US authorities. The priority now must be for these returnees to receive immediate counselling
and medical help.

“Following discussions with the Home Office yesterday we are pleased to have received assurances that the medical needs of these men will be assessed straight away and their cases will be dealt with expeditiously. These men have, of
course, already been questioned extensively by our security services in Guantanamo and we can see no justification for them to be detained any longer than absolutely necessary. We want these men now to be returned into the arms of their waiting families,” said Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain.

The Muslim Council of Britain notes, however, that over 600 men and boys (all of whom are Muslim) from other nations continue to be held at Guantanamo Bay without any prospect of receiving a fair trial. Their continued incarceration is
a blot on the United States’ claim to be the land of the free.

The MCB continues also to call upon the UK government to abide by the decision of the Law Lords who in December 2004 ruled that the indefinite detention of foreign terrorism suspects without trial in Belmarsh prison violates human
rights laws.

The Muslim Council of Britain (www.mcb.org.uk) is the UK's representative Muslim umbrella body with over 400 affiliated national, regional and local organisations, mosques, charities and schools.

Teaching standards
by Shah N. Khan

Last year daily dawn had editorially commented: "The news that the Higher Education Commission has recruited 67 foreign-based teachers - mostly overseas Pakistanis - and inducted them in some local universities is welcome. It is expected that those hired will help in raising teaching standards in our universities. .....

Education in our times must try to find whatever there is in students that might yearn for completion, and to reconstruct the learning that would enable them autonomously to seek that completion and thus become a good citizen fully aware with Huqooq Allah and Huqooqul Ibad. Not only Ulemas and our
educational experts but pscychologists must help in modernizing our education.

Straight Talk by Hameed Maker
Degrees for Sale.
Last week, I had ended my article “Marketers or Profiteers, stating that Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman, HEC, had exposed the names of bogus “institutes and universities” who peddle bogus degrees and PhDs. Unfortunately these “
educational institutes” are still being allowed to function and could end up doing more harm then good to our educational system.

Prof. Dr. Attaur Rahman has admitted that this country does not possess one university, which ranks amongst the first 500 in the world. To address this problem, our enlightened President – General has appointed the good Professor Atta to launch an aggressive program to rectify this sad situation.

How Government Works

Once upon a time the government had a vast Junk yard n the middle of a
desert.minded by a chowkidar.

The minister visited and asked "How does the watchman do his job without
instruction?"

So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person
to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies and posted the party activits of the minister.

Then a new ministr came and said "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people; one to do the studies and one to write the reports. Both had paid bribe to get the job.

Then another new minster came and said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So they created the following positions, a time keeper, and a payroll officer, then hired two more people after getting bribe..

Then another new minister came and said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?"  So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal
Secretary.all belonging to Chief Minister's family.

Then the President advised the provincial Governments to cut down expenses. So the Governer said, "We have had this department in operation for four years
and we are over budget, we must cutback overall cost." So they laid off the night watchman.

LettersChildren, Youth, and Families Foundation (CYFF)
Dear Colleagues / Students
Children, Youth, and Families Foundation (CYFF) has been  established in Islamabad, and we look  forward to your support and collaboration.

As professional psychologists, we are aware of the fact that a large number of children in Pakistan, and around the world, face serious difficulties during the
course of their development. In the west, a separate field of study called Developmental Psychopathology is being established in various universities to study problems of children and adolescents .Moreover, huge amounts of funds are being allocated for research in the field as well as for intervention and prevention
programs with children and families at risk..

In countries like Pakistan , the situation is worse and we need to do something practical for the  well being of children , youth and their families. Following is some update in this regard.

At National Institute of Psychology Quiad- e -Azam University , we have taken up some research work to study the  problems of children   .To begin with ,
these include  exposure to domestic and media violence and other family influences causing serious developmental problems for children . Resilience among
Children at Risk and  social ,  cognitive and physical  facilitators for  reduction of aggression and conduct disorders among children and adolescents are also
being explored . Most importantly, we are  developing  an indigenous  check list to investigate  behavior problems of Pakistani children and adolescents . A few
other similar  studies are in offing .Students are being encouraged to take up their research project (at M.Sc , Mphil , and PhD levels )  related to these issues so that we can develop expertise in Pakistan to work for the well being of children , youth and families .To provide a sound  theoretical basis for this kind of research work , we are introducing   a  new specialization course titled   Developmental
Psychopathology at M.Sc level from February  2005 .

To  put our knowledge and research into  practice , we have established   a Children , Youth and Families Foundation (CYFF )   which  is to work  for the
wellbeing of children in Pakistan .A brochure on the foundation as well as a membership form are  being enclosed  inviting you and your colleagues ,  your
family  and your friends  to become  members of the Foundation. You can work a great deal for the attainment of its mission and objectives...You can donate your time, energies and money to the extent you feel like. But at the most it will cost you only one hundred rupees (or dollars ten if you are abroad ) a year. Even if you can do the minimum, we will be greatly encouraged by the moral support provided by you.

I look forward to your suggestions to develop the Foundation further and make it more and more effective and dynamic..
Thanks and with warm regards
(Waiting for your prompt response),
Dr. Naeem Tariq
